This is my response to worksheet of To the Lighthouse

Here i have give my views about the worksheet:

Answers:

1. The technique of “Stream of consciousness” is very difficult and complex narrative technique where in “To the Light house” woolf has used this technique. The character’s feelings and thought  blend in to one onther. Woolf present the difficult relationship and giving the idea about her writing of stream of consciousness.. Virginia Woolf gives us a clue in her essay "Modern Fiction."  Woolf rejects the traditional style of writing novels "so well constructed and solid in its craftsmanship that is difficult for the most exacting of critics to see through what shink or crevice decay can creep in...And yet--if life should refuse to live there?"  so  she write in a stream of consciousness technique in to the lighthouse.

2.  In to the lighthouse Woolf uses various symbols but if take one example of Lily’s painting that is very symbolic one. The character of Lily is semi autobiographical which is represent the woolf her self  and her artistic process. This painting of lily can not seen as only a symbol but also seen as artistic dilemma faced by modernist artist , but specially a female artist. ‘Women can’t write, can’t paint”, this quote shaws the symbol of condition of women in the society.

3.  In “To the lighthouse” We can not find proper about that Woolf which character favors more Mrs. Ramsey or Lily.  Woolf’s sister who is painter and in this novel Woolf bring this character as character of Lily and put also herself in the character of lily. In this novel Woolf has portray Mrs. Ramsey’s character at the center of the novel who stand always for the others and sacrifices her happiness and the other side Lily is totally oppose from Mrs. Ramsey.

5. this is the term ‘Kunstlerroman’ and we also see in this novel. Which means artist’s novel we see the character of Lily who is the artist woolf has present the art of lily’s paint through her chacter. Woolf also describe that the grow of character from childhood to younger like the character of James.

6.  In “To the Light House” this both character Lily and Mrs. Ramsey both are very opposite characters. Woolf has portray the character of Mrs.Ramsey is very complex who more care cares about her family and her child and on the other side the character of Lily Portray as modern woman of that time who has new ideas and this both characters are very contrast to each other.

8.  At the end of the novel Lily completes the painting. She draws the Mrs.Ramsey’s painting but after completed she gives clear vision of Mrs. Ramsey’s character and she also shows her art in that time and also change the view of ‘Women can’t write, can’t paint’.
